Wondering how to get from point A to point B? I have you covered plus a few bonus tips on parking and permits. Hikers will usually follow one of these three types of trips on a day hike.

Out-and-Back Day Hikes

The most common type of hike is called an out-and-back hiking trip. It leaves from a trailhead and continues to a designated turn-around location. From there hikers will return back to their starting location on the same trail. These hikes can be very short or many miles each way.

Loop Trip Day Hikes

A loop trip day hike goes out one direction and returns by a different route without retracing the same trail.  It is called a loop, but on a map it may look like a lot of squiggly lines that don’t intersect - much. These trips vary in length and difficulty rating so know what to expect before you go.

Shuttle Trip Day Hikes

Less common is a shuttle trip hike because it requires at least two cars. You start and end at different trail heads that are too far to walk between, especially after a long day of hiking.

A Parking Pass and Permits

Did you know that if you are going into a National Forest or designated Wilderness area you need a special recreational permit to park? Learn more about  US National Forest Pass and Permits here. And for a final tip, don’t ruin a great day hike by losing your car keys. Always secure your valuables out of sight, lock the car and put your keys in a seldom used, zippered compartment inside your pack. Don’t put them in a pocket or part of your pack that you will be reaching into throughout the day!
