Trail ratings are useful to know before you go. By knowing the rating of your trail, you can be better prepared for safety and fun. Listed below are standard U.S. trail ratings.
Easiest
Easy hiking usually on a flat well-maintained and well-marked trail without obstacles and gentle elevation gains. These are usually around 3 miles.
Moderate
Moderate or Intermediate hikes may be a little more challenging with gradual elevation gain and small obstacles. There are typically between 3 - 5 miles.
Moderately Strenuous
Moderately strenuous hike will have steer inclines that require more strength and stamina. They may not be as clearly marked and take you off trail. They range between 5 - 8 miles and hiking poles may be recommended.
Strenuous
Strenuous hikes will challenge most hikers. These hikes are longer and steeper with elevation gains and losses of 1,000 to 2,500 feet and often go off trail. They range between 8 to 10 miles but can be shorter if they have very steep elevation gain or difficult terrain.
Very Strenuous
A very strenuous hike should only be attempted by experienced hikers with excellent navigation skills, strength and stamina. There will be steep grades and many obstacles and sections that can be dangerous. These hikes are commonly 10 miles plus and and may include stream crossings, rock scrambling and elevation gains and losses that are greater than 2,500 feet.
